  • Slaves were innocent people forced to work and had little or few rights, depending on their owner. They were OWNED.

Today's prisoners are criminals with RIGHTS (even if they took away the rights of their victims and families)! I think very few prisons "force" inmates to work.
They enjoy free shelter, food, medical care, heat, etc. and a few luxury items. (We have honest people in this country unable to afford even these basic necessities).

I think people in an American Prison have it so much easier than the slaves did.

Ones never had the chance of going free, and ones do now(baring sentences of life w/o parole).

Slaves born into slavery made no decision that lead them to their plight. Slaves sold into slavery by conquering tribes(yes other African's sold their brethren to whitey the slave trader)did not make any decision to lead them into their plight. They ended up there as a result of some other person's greed. Prisoners in the penal system are there as a result of their own bad decisions, and yes, their own greed.

There is a world of difference.

I think there is not much difference. I can not see a great difference between the fact being owned as property or being a prisoner for the rest of my life.
Sure prisoners have still some rights but these few rights are extremely reduced depending on the prison you stay.
Being owned by mistress or a master I think life would be defintively better because they want to make profit of their property. Owning slaves without profit does not make any sense.
So a mistress or a master would be forced to give their slaves more liberties as a prisoner ever can get and just in regard of these liberties slaves had to be given for keeping them profitable, the punishments which were that severe and quite cruel.
But anyway obedient slaves got little advantages and could marry and mostly stay with their families.
Before I had to stay the rest of my life isolated in a prison cell, I would defintively prefer being the slave of a mistress or a master even on the level of slavery in the old south.
Given the chance I think most prisoners would prefer slavery and accept being the property of a mistress or master.
