I think that its a moral issue even though its a double standard. On any given saturday its very likely that you are going to see a TV commercial for wine or beer. Most TV stations and liquor companies have been voluntarily choosing not to run ads for hard liquor on television but somehow beer and wine is OK. Also, who really needs to advertise for liquor? Those who want it know EXACTLY what they want and where to get it. Very seldom do you see someone browsing through a liquor store trying to decide what might be good for tonight.

From an article on the attached site, explaining why liquor ads are not seen: "The reason you do not is because, for the past 50 years, the spirits industry has lived under a voluntary ban on the placement of liquor ads on TV. http://www.cato.org/tech/tk/011220-tk.html NBC broke the ban but quickly restored it in 2002 after a wave of protest. http://adtimes.nstp.com.my/archive/2002/mac25c.htm

The other answer is correct. actually, liquor commercials are really not necessary. the public already knows what it likes and the money used on television commercials would be a waste. the liquor industry had rather advertise in a newspaper. most people like to read their liquor commercials, rather than on television. something about holding a newspaper and making a choice.

The cost for TV commercial is higher than prints. Besides, advertisements for liquor can be seen everywhere in our daily life. There is no need to spend big money on TV.

They stopped those along with cigarette commercials a long time ago. I guess the advertisers think that if they show people indulging on TV, it will be impressionable on kids. They have also limited the magazine ads as well.
