    Maybe. He might have not because the stingray could have still stung him. You can still die from any stingray sting.

    Steve's death was actually caused not by the stingray piercing his heart though no doubt that was a potentially fatal situation... his death was caused by him pulling the barb out after it struck him. Folks, remember - if you have an object lodged in your body, DON'T PULL IT OUT.

    I don't know the situation was unpredictable. Stingrays rarely attack. If it would have struck him in a different spot..mabye
