  • To me the light is aggravating and uncomfortable. Laser surgery isn't painful. The light is aggravating. As far as I'm concerned THE MOST aggravating and uncomfortable aspect of any eye exam by an ophthalmologist are those horrible eye drops and the time it takes for my eyes to re-adjust to normal light. • Well, that all depends on what you mean by "scan." Every adult with diabetes should have a "dilated" retinal examination by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) at least once a year. Dilation itself is not painful, but for a few hours after your exam you may be light sensitive. During the exam many doctors will obtain an image of the retina (sometimes referred to as a "scan"). This is not painful as it is essentially a high-tech photo of the retina. If during your examination your doctor finds certain types of retinopathy, then s/he will recommend a laser treatment. Laser treatments can range from "What? You're done already?!" to "Whoa! Hope I don't have to go through that again." The best way to avoid needing an uncomfortable laser procedure is to (1) control your blood sugar; (2) have your retina checked by your eye doctor at least once a year. The earlier your doctor can detect changes the more likely it is that you will avoid painful treatments.
