Everyone knows that humans, and most other mammals need oxygen to survive. But exactly what function does oxygen serve? What does it do, how is it used, and why can't we live without it?

Many chemical processes neeed oxygen for them to take place, especially the more rapid ones which are utilised by the metabolism of mammals. As far as I know, the only lifeforms which don't depend on oxygen are plants and some very primitive types of bacteria.
