It more common to use ear tags. Ear tags, thanks to bar codes on the surface, can provide much more information about the specific animal than a simple brand.

Yes we do, we brand our horses on the right hip, with a rocking M brand this is done to horses that are two, where the colt is old enough to be halter and saddle broke at which time the colts are branded to scare ownership. And I must emphasize that the branding are necessary for all horses ranging without a brand are subject to immediate retiring by Territorial Fish and game.That being said they are deemed a ferral intrusive species.

Yes, it's still efficient and quick. They also brand horses and rabbits.

Yep. Sometimes you've gotta move cattle via road and you can identify which are yours by it. If they got away, you could do that too. There are a few types of cows that can jump fences too. It's kinda mandatory.
