Ok..been there,done this!! The easiest way I have used is to remove the HDD,set the jumper to slave,fit to another PC and do a full format. Replace the HDD in your Compac after resetting the jumper to Master,and do a clean instal of your preferred OS..remembering of course to use NTFS for XP or FAT for Win 98.There are ways to instal over Vista,however that can be a minefield..as I have experienced on some clients' PCs. Using the above method,I have not had a failure yet. I might also add that of 4 PCs in my home,2 XP Pro,2 Vista, I absolutely endorse Vista as the best yet...extremely stable and secure....and I build lots of PCs.

www.howtogeek.com this site will give you the hints and how too's for many things you need and I believe one of them is going from vista back to XP, but you will need a XP disc
