  • I've been watching the news with the Great Depression on my mind a lot lately. This week, I checked out a book from the library to share with my daughter. I read it myself and got me thinking about the economy pretty seriously, as some of you might have noticed from my questions today. One of the images that really stuck in my mind was the image of unpaid policemen beating unpaid teachers for having the audacity to demand their pay. Local governments were bust and couldn't pay anyone. Both groups were working for free out of the love for their communities. For me, I'm thinking in terms of cutting down on the amount of solid waste our family produces. Solid waste disposal is a high cost for any community. I'm already growing a garden in my small town backyard. It cuts down on the amount of packaging we throw out. I compost all garden and vegetable food waste in a bin at the end of the yard. I also compost yard waste and leaves. I freeze vegetables. I buy a lot of our meat in bulk from a local farmer, so it is only wrapped in butcher's paper. I bake our bread and buy the flour and other grains in 50lb bags from the Mennonite bulk food store. I don't use paper towels, I use wash cloths I buy in bulk and wash them in our high efficiency washer. I used cloth diapers on my daughter. I usually throw out one to two bags of trash a week and recycle the rest. I'm also homeschooling my daughter. I have a lot of reasons for doing that, but she is one less kid our school district has to transport and educate.
  • Unfortunately, the problem we are facing is that consumers aren't able to spend, and therefore business is off and businesses can't spend. Business is laying off people, so they can't spend. The only one left who can spend is the public sector. If we all just pull in our horns and slash government too, that's a sure fire way to enter into the next depression. It's the same formula Hoover followed after 1929's crash.
  • My mother in-law.
  • Very good question my fellow citizen. My suggestion is altering waste collection to ever 2 weeks collection as cost savings measure.Retained revenue could be used for recycling projects.
  • All government levels receive more than enough of our tax money at this time, so I certainly would not entertain ever offering another cent to any of them! They receive more than enough, they waste so damn much of it on the most insane things that are both just stupid and totally immoral!
  • I will sacrifice my taxes ... and not pay them ... lol . I personally believe that enough tax dollars are received ; and that it is the overly high salaries and waste of the tax $$$$ causing the problems ...
  • I would be willing to collect on a bill the politicans owe the public for NOT doing thier job...lol...That would help right off.
