  • Could be but not necessarily so! Low energy levels or poor health may lead to lack of enthusiasm which in turn could be interpreted as lack of motivation.
  • That's one of the symptoms, but there are many symptoms that are required to be considered clinically depressed. Five of the following symptoms must be present within the same 2 week period for a diagnosis to occur, and as with all disorders, these can't be better accounted for by some other disorder, drug use, or in this specific case, bereavement (mourning the loss of a loved one). 1. sad mood most of the day, nearly every day 2. loss of interest or pleasure in activities 3. significant weight loss/gain 4. insomnia/hypersomnia 5. extremely jittery/sluggish 6. fatigue 7. excessive/inappropriate feelings of guilt/worthlessness 8. diminished ability to think/concentrate 9. recurrent thoughts of death, thoughts of suicide, or attempts at suicide It's easy, after reading these to think, "Oh my...that's me!" That's why you should never do a self-diagnosis when trying to determine if you're depressed.
