Tonsils are a secondary lymphoid organ. Secondary lymphoid organs (such as the lymph nodes) are the places that T-cells and B-cells go to get their "we're being attacked by viruses and bacteria- get out there and kill them" assignments.

So the purpose of the tonsil is to act as a meeting hall for the soldiers of the immune system so they can coordinate a war against whatever is invading our body.

To provide plenty of anxiety to those with swollen or too large ones. Same with wisdom teeth. Actually, I heard a piece on NPR about this. They said that wisdom teeth, tonsils, and the ability to get sick is an evolutionary ADVANTAGE because it keeps survival of the fittest going.

There is one tonsils benefit that medical doctors never learn. In addition to what is most often published, the tonsils preserve good eye vision.

My father, born in 1886, learned this. As a child I had tonsillitis, but he refused to have them removed. This is why he never needed glasses until he died at 85. I needed reading glasses a few years, and had double vision from an injury and seven weeks coma. But with lutein and vitamin A, in most fresh carrot juice, and powerful tonsils, my vision has returned to normal, and from being careful about what I eat and a few other supplements, I rarely need reading glasses either.
