I work in the healthcare field. Handwashing is the number one way to prevent the spread of germs. In theory, if evreyone practiced good handwashing techniques we all would be much healthier. The problem is because germs can't be SEEN, we tend to think that they don't exist and therefore we are not spreading them.

    Does it pay?

I ash mine both before and after... How's that?

Think about it next time you consider where your own hands have been festering with germs from the last trip around the bathroom and how many other people feel the same way you do.

Yes, both to protect others and to protect you. If you touched a doorknob or bus strap or anything else up to that point, you may have H1N1 "Swine" flu virus on your hands. If you touch your eyes you may contract the virus. Washing hands is the most effective way known of reducing your chances of getting the flu, and there's no better opportunity than when you go to the bathroom; the sink is right there.

It may not pay but will save you money in the long run... less cold and flu medicine and less doctors. Single most important thing you can do to ward off germs, especially in the winter when they are all around us.

Please wash the hands after using the bathroom. I do not want to pick up anyone's germs or bacteria, just as they wouldn't want to pick up anything I may have on my hands afterwards. Ugh.

Helpful hint -Turn on the faucet handles and go ahead and get the towel ready (if pull down lever type), wash your hands, get the papertowel & dry your hands, open the door with the papertowel, hold the door open with your hip and throw the papertowel in garbage can. Voila! No touching of dirty objects.

Not if you have to touch a faucet handle to turn the water off, or when you touch the door handle on the way out with your bare hands :)

It can't hurt. But you have to consider that the door knob and the faucet in most bathrooms have more bacteria than the toilet does. Avoid these 2 land mines and you may get out in one piece.

    Wife just had neck surgery.

The hospital has hand-cleaning products all over the place.

I think they have finally realized that staph infections are coming from visitors to patients and not from the operating table.

Washing your hands, sanitizing your hands is just good common sense.

I do this after each police call i answer.

I carry a huge bottle of hand disinfectant in my car.

absolutely, helps to prevent getting sick and spreading germs to others.

CDC cites five common household scenarios in which disease-causing germs can be transmitted by contaminated hands.

Hands to food: germs are transmitted from unclean hands to food, usually by an infected food preparer who didn't handwash after using the toilet. The germs are then passed to those who eat the food.

Infected infant to hands to other children: during diaper changing, germs are passed from an infant with diarrhea to the hands of a parent; if the parent doesn't immediately wash his or her hands before handling another child, the germs that cause diarrhea are passed to the second child.

Food to hands to food: germs are transmitted from raw, uncooked foods, such as chicken, to hands; the germs are then transferred to other foods, such as salad. Cooking the raw food kills the initial germs, but the salad remains contaminated.

Nose, mouth, or eyes to hands to others: germs that cause colds, eye infections, and other illnesses can spread to the hands by sneezing, coughing, or rubbing the eyes and then can be transferred to other family members or friends.

Food to hands to infants: germs from uncooked foods are transferred to hands and then to infants. If a parent handling raw chicken, for example, doesn't wash his or her hands before tending to an infant, they could transfer germs such as salmonella from the food to the infant.

Handwashing can prevent the transfer of germs in all five of these scenarios. CDC recommends vigorous scrubbing with warm, soapy water for at least 15 seconds.

No, otherwise we would ALL be millionaires... BUT, if you want to decrease your exposure to germs, and increase your good health, by all means wash your hands many times per day!

All these people are right! No money but no germs either.

Don't go crazy like I did though, I had this weird period of washing them so much they were red raw and looked like uncooked meat. Not good!

I wish people weren't so uber clean now though, it's making kids ill isn't it? Under exposure to harmless bacteria. Makes 'em get sick real easy!

Oh, afterthought! It also means you don't get stinky hands. Or sticky... Ew.

Ha! Good Q..it doesnt pay, but sure does help. I often wonder the same. Wash your hands, to open a dirty knob, after you have touched everything else in between...but its better to wash then not to, regardless!
