As for sugar in terms of the dry sweeteners, sugar cane and sugar beets are the primary sources. Liquid sweeteners, such as in soft drinks, will most often come from corn insofar as here in the U.S. You are NOT a moron! The granular kind comes from beets, sugar cane, palm sugar, dates, and maple sugar. Liquid kinds of sugar are honey, maple, corn syrup, barly syrup.
