One is not better than the other. Comparing these two sports is like comparing The Beatles vs. Rolling Stones or Britney Spears vs. Jessica Simpson :) Each sport has a huge world wide following. Each is enjoyable to watch when two good opponents play each other. I give two thumbs up to both!

Football is not better than soccer. One of the reasons is that soccer is more competitive, In football if you are big and strong you can be good at football in soccer to be a succesful soccer player you need Speed,Touch,Power,Accuracy, And more. One more thing Soccer is more popular than football in every country but the US. IT mostly depends on what sport you play but I that have played both I prefer Soccer so does the rest of the world

Hey, guys...to say american football is better than futbol(soccer) is probably one of the most ignorant things you can say. The tradition surrounding futbol is unprecedented. You're american football has been around for roughly 130 years....just to give you an idea...soccer has about 2900 years on that. To say american football is anywhere close to soccer....arrogant. Football players have time outs, breaks between plays, wear pads, and 90% of the time they have to run no more than 5-10 yards...and that's being generous. soccer players...2 45+ minute halves, nonstop running on a 130 yard field, no breaks, no time to stop and strategize, pure instinct and game intelligence. Not to mention full contact with no pads, not tainted by steroids, and pure 100% skill. Soccer is the world's favorite sport, hands down. No questions asked. Thanks

Because it is geared to generate more dramatic plays with the downs system. There is always a thrill on third down and it's edge of the seat when it's forth.
Punting and kickoffs are filled with anticipation of a big play.

Soccer can be slow and plodding with sudden flare up of action. It's drama can be seen in free kicks and corner kicks. The action is nonstop in soccer and they don't take breaks in the action like they do in football which is football's greatest knock, the plodding of its action as well.

Soccer is not as eventful as American Football and doesn't have near the amount of strategy.

It's better because there are more than 1 way to score, and the use of pure speed and sheer power and it's the ultimate team sport. soccer has constant movement, but hardly any scoring, hey i'm biased i'm an american. soccer is cool for the soccer fans.

I agree with anonymous more than perryman. American football has more strategy, yes, but it stops and starts so much more. It appears to be a hybrid between rugby (both league and union) and Association football, but with the flowing grace of neither. The only point I would pick with anonymous is the idea that American football has a huge following worldwide. Many countries enjoy watching and playing rugby, and almost every country has a massive following for football, but America is the only place where American football is more popular than either of these. It is also the only country, as far as I know, where baseball is more popular than cricket. This may not be precise, as cricket is also not enjoyed by many countries.

For this reason I have to say that the question is a leading one and the answer has to be "Because it's not".

There is more scoring. The strategy is deeper. There are various ways to score, throwing, catching, running, kicking.
There are short stoppages of the game that allow you to analyze what just took place.

Tough question. I am a football fan (got the game on now) and I enjoy football more, but I'm not sure it's better than soccer. The advantage I see in a soccer game is that at any moment the course of the game can change. That makes goals -- or shots on goal -- more exciting.

I think football is more interesting to watch. To me soccer can be really fun if the stakes are right, but if it isn't an elimination tournament, it bores me.

The main difference to me is arbitrary officiating. I don't like the yellow and red card penalties, especially with the sometimes thin line between a good play and a yellow card.

You can break the question down into various categories. I see a lot of different responses to different elements of the games. But ultimately, it depends on what you like in a sport.

Strategy: Certainly, and without any debate, American Football wins in this department. Over any other sport. Just the fact that you field 11 players on offense and 11 players on defense, not to mention 11 players on special teams. Each group has a massive playbook and a slew of coaches.

People talk about the stoppages in the game, not realizing that as a primarily strategic game, stoppages are necessary. You might as well also bash Chess because the gameplay isn't continuous.

Grace: Soccer is a game of grace. Ebb and flow, back and forth. Continuity. It's not about the moment, it's about the dance. Especially considering the difficulty of progression, the art of moving a ball with your body. The grace of artful ballhandling is a thing to behold.

Athleticism: Both sports require it in different ways. But football gets the edge. The fact that soccer players run around for 90 minutes without getting tired says a lot for their endurance. But the slightest bit of contact and they fall to the ground in theatrical displays. If they ran around smashing full bore into other players, hurdling, blocking, shoving, and pounding on 200-350 pound guys play after play, I'm sure they'd need a bit of a break.

Skill: Soccer gets the edge. It takes more skill to control a ball with your feet. But assuming that football requires no skill is patently incorrect. In the end of the day, speed, strength, power, and raw athleticism counts for more in football than they do in soccer.

There are plenty of other factors too, but these are the arguments I hear mentioned again and again. Ultimately, it really depends on what you want to get out of a sport, and who the audience is.

have u gone mad with this question??nothing is better than soccer.. If u wanna play american football start eating a lot and go to gym because all you need is a strong body, but soccer is not different, because the physical appearance plays a less role for soccer, all u need is the skill, talent to control the ball and force you hit the ball with, its more about the skill, accuracy, speed and power in SOCCER, fuck this minded AMERICANS who dont know the actual meaning of the game

Football is more off a commitment, when you play football, you ARE a football player, dosent matter if your RB; WR or OL DL. Soccer is, however, more universal, especilly in poorer countries. All you need is a boll, for f sake! Point is, if you want something charcter defeining, football is the best. If you want something were you can MAYBE be something big, but still have a lot of fun during breakes in school, etc.

Professional football in America is a special game, a unique game, a game played nowhere else on Earth. It is a rare game. The men who play it make it so. Pro football is a mirror of early America. Reflecting toughness, courage, and self-denial. The game is wide open, not confined. X's and O's on a black board are translated into imagination on the field. It can be one man rising above the obscurity of the grim, no glory duty of special teams. It is a lineman clawing through the carnage at the scrimmage line and devouring a quarterback. The game is perpetual motion. A swirl of flying bodies and constant collisions. A two and a half hour carnival of color, sound, and action. There is glory in the legends of this hard muscle life. And there's poetry in every season filled with sweat and strife. It is a sport that tests the spirit and challenges the brain. Do you fear the force of the wind, the slash of the rain? Go face them and fight them be savage again! A time for achievement, a time for purpose, a time for glory.

hey there. last time i checked soccer was not full contact...ive played soccer, rugby , and football (american) and in my oppinion football is the hardest and takes the most skill. in football, you have to deal with bone crushing, anticpated hits due to pre snap reads and use of major INSTICT to react to them. oh and the pads just make the hitting harder, try having a steal facemask break you hand or shatter you ribs. or have someone lower their shoulder on you and hit you , then get them to throw some shoulder pads on and do it again and tell me which hurt more. yeah there are breaks but getting hit like that and running with resistance against other people tires you out much faster than soccer since in soccer if you not near the ball there insnt much to do (huge field) and yes i do realize that a defender will run much less then say a mid fielder. Football also requires you to use your feet AND you hands. soccer players are largley not tough, and cry if put on a afb field thnks!

I'm an American and I personally feel that soccer is much better. It takes much more skill and time to master because of the fitness level, strategy, and coordination.

Skill: In American Football, anyone who was born with athletic ability can play. If you're big and strong, you can become a linemen, center, etc. If you're fast then you can become a running back, wide receiver, and so on. Positions do not take that much tim to master. It is much easier to run with a ball tucked under your arm than it is to sprint with a ball at your feet. Finding teamates with a pass by throwing a ball is alot simpler to perform than passing to a teamate with your feet. And I don't mean a freaking toe poke, football players. There a seriously around 20 to 30 different ways to intentionally hit the ball with your foot, all in which cause different lifts and spins that adjusts the ball's speed, direction, and curve. These are all done while moving and under pressure.

Fitness: There is no doubt that you must have a higher endurance and overall fitness level to play soccer. Nothing else needs to be said here. Soccer has no stoppages and goes for ninety minutes, footbal has about thirty or more downs in a quarter. Just simply look at football players, and look at the soccer players. Nuff said.

Toughness: Football players have to very physically tough and brave, no doubt. I would never be ignorant enough to try and take that away from the sport. Even if they are wearing pads, the hits are painful. But, do not suddenly attack soccer because it's not a constant brawl. Soccer was made to be more technichally based, not athleticism centered. The one thing that I hate about soccer the most is: the players whining and flopping around like babies to get calls. Its pathetic and these men are not this weak. No human on the face of the earth is as weak as the players try to act. You must take into account that they're not wearing pads on every part of their body, but still. Finally, SOCCER IS A CONTACT SPORT. There isn't as much contact as football, but these guys get knocked down and smashed into all the time, without pads. In sumarry, football obviously has much more contact, but give soccer credit. If it didn't have the bad acting, it would have a better appearence.

Excitement: Football obvioulsy has a higher scoring games, but the touchdowns are much less celebrated, and are usually just regarded as something that come on most posessions. In soccer the build up is incredible. The constant stir of passing, skill, and teamwork is truly interesting to watch if you have the mature appreciation of what it takes to play the game well. When there is a breakaway or a great through ball, the entire crowd is brought to their feet as they look on in anxious anticipation. And when the ball is put in the back of the net, or the goalkeeper pulls off a brilliant save, the crowd either roars in excitement or drops down inanguish. Perhaps to appreciate soccer you must first understand it, and thats unfortunate as most Americans don't have the patience to care.

Strategy: Last category here. Football has lots of plays, hundreds. But all of these only last around ten seconds and are predetermined and planned. Soccer players have to adapt to every situation. Anything can happen at anytime and so these players must always be vigilante. Its not just a bunch of guys running around in random fashion. Any advanced player or coach knows its more than that. No planned or preditermined plays, team coordination is a must.

football is better than soccer because It utilizes every component of an athlete, speed, strength, agility, power, size, and brains. The breaks in between plays allows the player to go all out every play and be explosive on every play when in soccer, they kind of jog around and kick the ball sometimes. The reason the rest of the world doesn't like/understand football is because in most cases they are to small and weak. So they play soccer. Football is the Dominant sport, I would love to see any soccer player try to play football. They would get killed out there. But if a football player went to play soccer. It wouldn't be much of a problem with a little practice because they are already physically dominant.
