  • The girl in front of me was also issued a ticket for the same reason. This occured in Minnesota. The thing the police officer based this decision on was how the damage was. There was a witness oh was holding a large flashy sign on the right side walk (who I think was considered to be distracting the driver in front of me) who could colaborate my story, but he left without being questioned. This whole situation worried me because of possible future insurance rates, as well as my driving record. The offical citation states, "following to close" I am not sure if that is the same as tailgating. I thought I had enough space between me and the car in front of me.
  • Yes, you were following too closely if you were unable to stop, freezing or not, you were following to close to stop. Rules of the road are only thumbnail rules, if you take longer to stop than the book states, then that should be accounted for. It doesn't matter why the car in front of you stopped abruptly. Sorry thats the way things go. Next time you will know for sure.
  • Sorry, gotta line up with tjatherton on this one. Every driver is responsible for leaving enough following room to stop, under all conditions present at the time. The fact that there is an awful lot of tailgating going on doesn't change what is both a common sense and a legal requirement for road safety.
  • I mean, even this is just right off the stop light? I mean it was litterally right after the stop light when everyone is stacked up waiting. To me that seems impossible for anyone not to collide after an abrubt stop directly after a light. Litterally everyone in that line ended up colliding, I was the last person.
