  • Not really. Any small improvement you may enjoy will be more than offset by the loss of transmitted light caused by placing the two filters in series. This can cause problems with auto-focus systems and with manual focusing, if the image becomes too dark. A polarizing filter reduces the transmitted light by up to two f-stops. Two filters in series could produce a reduction of up to four f-stops. This would be equivalent, for example, to reducing the film speed from ISO 400 to ISO 25. In fact, two polarizing filters in series could reduce the transmitted light to zero, depending on the orientation of the polarizing elements and their quality. Most auto-focus SLR and DSLR cameras have problems with plane or linear polarizing filters, which can affect both the auto-focus and light metering systems. Circular polarizing filters can be used with any camera.
