Start by checking the fuses and relays. Consult your owners manual if you don't know the location of the relay panel or fuse block. If you don't have a manual, www.autozone.com offers online repair guides that should assist you in locating the fuses and relays.
4x4 actuator located on the transmission is bad. call a local auto parts store for more info.
you have to be in N and press down on the brake pedal while you push the 4x4 Low button.
The most likely problem is the transfer case shift motor which is located on the backside of the transfer case. Instructions on how to fix it (and many other Explorer problems) can be found at

You're reading My 1991 Ford Explorer has push buttons for 4-wheel drive and Low range. But neither is activating when I push the buttons. Actually nothing happens. What could be wrong? Should it be in gear? What else could I check or do?
