If the law says you cannot use greater force than that used against you, does it expect you to get beat with a bat while holding a gun?

    ... both are considered to be deadly weapons, so you could shoot once (well aimed) to defend yourself and not have to worry much about it ... but it would go very much easier for you if your shot was to an arm to cause dropping the bat, or to a leg to make them fall down and stop swinging ... and would go worse for you if you just kept shooting until your gun was empty, with many fatal head and chest shots (that would be excessive force) ...

    Getting hit by a bat is deadly force, so you can respond with deadly force (i.e. shooting the person).

    I think it depends on how hard and how badly the person is beating you with a bat. If the culprit gave you just a few whacks and you took out a gun and shot him immediately, that would be using more force than needed. However, if a person was trying to kill you and was beating you viciously with a bat, I think you have every right to use a gun against that person----it'd be considered self-defense to save your life.
