Single-layer DVD -R and +R disks hold about 4.7 GB of data. Dual-layer -R and +R disks hold about 8.5 GB.

Assuming that the disc is your standard DVD+R (single layer) is will hold approx. 4.7 gb. As far as video goes, when used in set top DVD recorders, it can hold up to 8 hours of video, depending on the record speed you set it on. Much like VCR's, set top DVD recorders have several different record/play speeds (mine has FINE, SP, LP, and EP, each recording up to 1hr, 2hrs, 4hrs, and 6 hrs respectively). However, just like vcrs, the slower the record speed, the more data packed into the space, the lower quality the recording will be. It seems like I've seen more set top/computer dual layer recorders available. These hold quite a bit more data, but I'm unsure of the precise capacities. Hope that helps.
