A "roman a clef," is a story with a key. The author has used real people but given them false names, sometimes close enough to the real ones to be decipherable. This technique began in 17th-century France. A recent example is "Primary Colors" by Anonymous, a thinly-disguised story of Bill Clinton's rise to the presidency.
