  • A truffle is a type of edible fungi that grows underground, they look like a small ball of hard black mud. They are notoriously difficult to find, which is why they're so expensive. In France and Italy, they train pigs and dogs to hunt for them with their keen senses of smell. It's also impossible to farm or mass produce truffles because they only grow in very old woodlands. I don't know the exact market price for truffles, but I do know that they're worth more than their weight in gold.
  • I forgot to mention that truffles contain a pheremone that is attractive to men and repulsive to women. This is why more men than women like the taste.
  • truffels are very expessive because they are by pigs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!farmed
  • a whole bunch.
  • I'm watching a Feb. 2007 episode of Martha, her guest is from Garland Gourmet Mushrooms and Truffles Inc. and says their black perigord truffles take six years to grow and cost $50/ounce, around $800/lb but truffles sometimes run up to $2,200 depending on type and demand. They use dogs instead of pigs to find them.
  • I bought a box of truffles from a sweet shop for $6.99 covered in chocolate with a nut on top! Are we all talking about the same thing here or what?
  • WE GOT A FEW AT A STORE AND IT WAS 9.99 IT WAS NOT GOOD FOR 5 TRUFFLES
  • According to a recent show on the Travel Channel, about $3,000 US per lb.
  • By far Northern France has the most divine truffles known to man. No where on earth does the quality of this product match up. Recently I was in a little market just south of Madeules, where a 5th generation truffle farmer sold me a small bag for just over 7,000 Euros. It was worth every penny, and I can't wait to get back to purchase more. Happy truffle hunting.
  • A old southern france tatic of finding these elusive fugui is to sprinkle cider vinger around the base of an oak or beech tree and within 3 to four days animals and bugs will have pushed away all the loose soil around the tree except where there is truffels under neath. Take time to study the moved soil as some times it can be very difficult to see what soil has been moved. It takes time (lots of time) but it is worth it as the are worth about 40 euro an ounce depending on demand.
  • Dear Massive... no, a box of chocolate truffles that you buy at the store or pharmacy are not the same truffles that is being discussed on this page. I don't know why some chocolate manufacturers refer to some of their chocolates as being "truffles"... it's a scam.
