My bathroom scale came with a bone mass chart. I don't have a website to reference but have supplied the normal ranges from my scale's chart:

    FEMALES: age 20-29 normal= 6.2-7%
    FEMALES: age 30-39 normal= 6-6.8%
    FEMALES: age 40-49 normal= 5.6-6.4%
    FEMALES: age 50-59 normal= 5.2-6%
    FEMALES: age 60-69 normal= 4.9-5.7%
sorry no listings over age 69

    MALES: age 20-29 normal= 7.6-8.4%
    MALES: age 30-39 normal= 7.4-8.2%
    MALES: age 40-49 normal= 7-7.8%
    MALES age 50-59 normal= 6.6-7.4%
    MALES age 60-69 normal= 6.3-7.1%
sorry no listings over age 69

i need the same answer and i totally agree with the above because we want to know to aid prevention of decreasing bone mass not to find a cure or to worry about something we dont know we have!

Perfectly good question, I have the same curiosity and want to know more about "BM" as reported by the new electronic scales. My own electronic scale (WW67T by Conair) reports "BM" (Bone Mass?) but gives no hint about the target range or the basis of the number. Osteoporosis-related bone mass and bone density indicators show up on the web as "t" or "z" scores, the deviation from norm - number of sigmas or std.dev.'s away from some reference point. This scale gives very reproducible results for all other metrics on the menu, I would like to know more about the "BM" number.

So because some piece of new technology is giving you don't understand, you have decided to worry about it and try and find out what you8 are worrying about.

May I suggest you have got it the wrong way round? If and when you find out what Bone Mass is, and whether it matters, and whether bathroom scales can really give you an accurate measurement of it, you worry about something else.

You know, I presume, about weight - that is why you have scales, If your weight is not within 10% of optimal for your height/age/shape, I suggest you worry about that. If and when your doctor or other medical advisor talks about Bone Mass, /then/ you can start worrying about it.

I appreciate the answer provided by "answergenie" as I was trying to find the same information. As far as the response by "Im Alec" he/she obviously doesn't realize that bone mass is, in fact, a very serious issue for women as it is the indicator for osteoporosis, something that can be very harmful, but also something which can be reversed if treated early. Additionally, today's home scales are for the most part very accurate. We all need to be pro-active about our health and I think it is better to attempt to find this basic information on our own before bugging our already over-extended physicians. I personally just got a scale and my mass number was 4 (normal being 5.2-6). At age 52, pre-menopause, and a family history of osteoporosis, I am now "concerned" and will follow up with my physician.
