I have a Nikon F3 camera with Nikkor 40mm 1.4, as well as 28mm 2.8, 55mm 2.8, and 135mm 2.8 lenses. Can I use these lenses with a new digital Nikon D80 or similar camera?

Nikon SLR and DLSR bodies with electronic coupling can be used with many older lenses (e.g., AI, AI-S), but with restrictions. You need to check the owner's manual of the specific model you are interested in to find out what the precise restrictions are.

You can also have older, Non-AI lenses converted to AI. This service is provided at http://www.aiconversions.com for a modest cost.

    In general:

    - Non-AF lenses will not auto-focus on electronic Nikon bodies.

    - The metering system on many Nikons with electronic coupling is disabled when a non-electronic lens is attached. This is done on cameras that Nikon considers to be for "amateurs" (e.g., F80, D80). This means that you must use a handheld meter or some other method to determine the proper exposure. The metering system on "pro" bodies (e.g., F100, F5, D200) is not disabled, but only works with the manual and aperture-priority exposure modes.

    Footnote:
    40mm f/1.4? There was a 35mm f/1.4, a 45mm f/2.8, and a 50mm f/1.4, but the only 40mm Nikkor lens I am aware of was an f/4 enlarger lens.
