I have a pair of black pants with subtle grey pinstripes. Does the shirt need to be a solid color or can I wear one with a pattern?

Go with a solid color. It is very, very easy to go wrong, mixing patterns.

i would only wear a solid shirt. if you do wear patterns and it's not a matching suit, make sure it's different. ei. thicker striped shirt, or solid shirt w/ striped or checkerd tie. but who knows try whatever you have in that closet. it might as well be the next trend..

Checks and stripes do not mix, in clothing. wear only a solid color shirt, preferably grey. Now, strut your stuff.

How subtle are the pinstripes? If they are light and are more to give texture to the pants, then you can probably where a dual colored shirt. But keep it simple.
