It is not absolutely true. Both my wife and I have index fingers that are shorter than our ring fingers.

I think this is bull. I mean it could happen that the mayority has them the way you say, like around 70%. But the rest may have them like the oppisite sex. I've seen a lot of persons who have them like the opposite. Many theories, it's supposed to have something to do with the amount of testosterone you were exposed while your mom was pregnat. They say people with the ring finger longer are better at sports, die earlier, are better at math and music. People who have the index longer are supposed to be better in martial arts, literature, and live longer. They also say girls with longer ring fingers, are more sexual than the others, more aggresive and prefare more masculine guys. Stuff like that, nothing has been clear. Other study says that the lenght of your fingers is basically genetic. You never know. All i know is I am girl, my ring finger is longer in both hands, I´m straight, I suck at sports and I'm kind of good at literature. So, trust me, those investigations are not very accuarate.

I'm a heterosexual man, and here's a picture of my left hand:

Seriously though, even before that injury occured, the ring finger was shorter than the index finger, as is the case on my right hand as well.

No, as my own fingers prove, and such generalizations are rarely true.

You may, however, be thinking of recent studies which suggest a correlation between the length of the second and fourth fingers and sexual orientation. The hypothetical reason for this is that androgen (a hormone) has an effect both on finger length and future sexual orientation in a developing fetus. This site has links to a couple papers on the subject and more information:

I have met both men and women with the index longer than the ring finger... however...

Which way are we looking at our hands? Palms down?
with my palm down my ring finger is longer than my index finger.
with my palm up my index finger appears longer...

If I can't even tell which one of my fingers is longer how would I be able to make a definite decision on this? Oh no! Am I a woman or a man??? OH NO!

My fingers are the same length, no difference and my husband's index is longer than his ring finger. I've seen it all ways.
