If I'm driving then it is listening to the radio or talking to a friend if I have a companion. If I'm the passenger then it is listen to music, read or do puzzles. Playing games is the best way to take your mind off things.

Read James Herriot's vet books to the driver. Crack a bunch of pecans and shell them in your lap as you drive. (The shells can go on the floor -- clean them up later; this will keep you awake and net you a bunch of shelled pecans.) Study a foreign language. Make a tape recording of what you're seeing and what you're thinking. I've seen a lot of people who read while driving and I've done it very successfully but passengers hate it and they always want to read the book you got first so I would not recommend it.
