  • Tell him to take them off please. He's doing harm to his legs. My dad use to wear those to run, so he could gain more muscle in his legs. Yes, he did gain muscle on his legs... fast forward 20 years he can barely walk now. So tell him if he insists on wearing them, not to do any exercises, with them on.
  • Ankle weights are actually a good way to gain muscle in your ankles. Tell your husband not to wear the ankle weights all day though. Too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing. Tell him to wear them for short periods throughout the day every other day.
  • To be honest, they would probably do more harm than good to be wearing them that long. I have to disagree with BenjaminMiller, however, you don't have any muscles in your ankles that you could build up through wearing these weights, any more than you would build up wrist muscles by wearing heavy bracelets. In order to work a specific muscle, in this case either the gastrocnemius or the peronei, you have to extend and contract that muscle, again in the case by either flexing the toes up and down (gastrocnemius) or rocking your foot from side to side (peronei). Wearing ankle weights don't offer resistance to either of these movements. What they WOULD do, especially if worn for too long, would cause excess strain on the tendons and other connective tissues within your ankle and knee, because extra weight like this is simply not meant to be here. Over time, this will cause a WORLD of problems, which far outweigh any possible benefits of your husband wearing them. I honestly don't know of any benefit to wearing these. I think they were a exercise fad who's time has passed!
  • My ankle weights have been used for 15+ years, several times a week, (NO RUNNING) walking, cycling, leg lifts--- And I can still hike miles with them, at 78! Start with 1 or 2 lbs, after months go to 3 lbs. Good luck. (Ignore negativity expressed by jealous people)
  • I find it useful in that it provides entertainment for the whole neighborhood as they watch him parade around in body weights XD
  • ive heard they tear up your knees.
  • Hi, I believe wearing weights around the ankles and running it could be dangerous for a lot of people. slightly wrong step could cause a wrench OR can create serious problems on the hips as well as the knees if someone is not carefull.
