First of all I must warn you I don't use any. Personally I don't want to get too big and I'm quite heappy as I am. But when I get magazines like mens fitness etc I always get loads of minimags containing lots of adverts. I must stress that if you do choose to buy supplements, only ever buy from a reputable company. God knows what goes into other formula. Obviously you need a supply of protein in order to provide amino acids to repair the muscle that you damage when weightlifting. That's how you build muscle - the muscle fibres tear under stress and undergo hypertrophy (grow in size) inresponse to the increased demand you put on them. The aching feeling you get the day(s) after a workout is the fibres repairing and rebuilding. Secondly, muscle require a source of glycogen, the preferential energy source required for them to work. This is produced from carbohydrates - people on the Atkins diet lose a lot of weight because they lose muscle mass from lack of energy, a very bad thing. So if you are trying to look buff and sacrifice carb intake, you won't get anywhere. You also need a longer term energy store - from fats. Muscle is an active tissue, using calories even when at rest. Hence why muscular guys need more food than thin guys. However, don't be put off by thinking that you will blubber up, there are good and bad fats. Burger king = bad fats. Fish oils = good fats. Progain contains all these and is designed as a supplement to normal meals. An alternative, Promax is designed to completely replace your meals but I would stick with the former as A it will be a fair chunk cheaper and B you asked for a supplement. Besides it is usually best to ease in gradually than go all out. maximuscle supplies these in the UK and is a respectable company, and delivers overseas. Check out their website for loads more info. One last important point - only do this if you are sure. It can be expensive and the results are (like all fitness) not instant, nor permanent. You must keep up training in order to use up the energy n the supplements, or else you will get big - in the wrong way. If you have just recently strated to go to the gym, don't overd it however, learn your limits and make sure you know how to use the equipment before doing large weights. Anyway good luck.

i would say the absolute best thing you can do for your body in terms of gaining muscle and not putting in any unnatural chemicals is to eat lots of lean protein - this is the most natural thing you can do to help your muscles. there are plenty of good protein supplements as well. you may want to consult a dietician and go to a health store, since they can make recommendations based on your goals. absolutely avoid steriods - the side effects aren't worth it.
