  • When your dad catches you smoking and gives you a good spanking.
  • I am a NOT a fan of negative reinforcement. A negative condition is introduced to control or avoid a certain behavior. A dog misbehaves and receives a spanking. The dog's behavior improves due to the consequence of the spanking. - Positive reinforcement is much more effective and respectful. The dog behaves. You reward him by telling him that he's a "good boy". His self-esteem is boosted and he stays on his best behavior to earn your praise.
  • A child won't stay away from the electrical extension cords. He pulls them out of the wall and then tries to put them back in despite the parent's warnings that he shouldn't do this. He receives an 110 volt electrial shock (painful but not an injury) and decides not to play with electrical cords any longer. Negative Devices and aids to keep a child away from and prevent playing with electrical outlets are made to safeguard the child. And positive reinforcement can be used to reward the child from not playing with electrical cords. Positive
  • An example of negative reinforcement is getting nagged at by the spouse to take out the trash and when the person getting nagged at finally decides to get up to do this, the nagging stops. This eventually leads to an increase in the desire to take out the trash without the nagging (or to avoid the nagging).
  • Getting one's fingers burned when touching a hot stove.
  • this question sux :) that's negative reinforcement
  • example: if a kid misbehaves and recieves a smack for it and then continues to misbehave and get smacks, then the kid will eventually behave because he/she associates misbehaving with the smack (negative reinforcement)
  • Negative reinforcement is not a negative thing...it occurs when something unpleasurable is taken away as a reward to reinforce a certain behavior. The common misunderstanding is that is a bad thing, but it is not. expl...Teacher tells her students they will recieve less homework if they all clean up their messes. This is taking away a negative thing to enforce a positive behavior...
  • giving someone a cookie, and then shocking them afterward. Trains them to NOT want it.
  • A child getting grownded for not eating vegtables negative reinforcement is punishment for bad behaviour
  • Behaviorially speaking, what many of you posted were actually examples of punishment. ScholarAtHeart and ...bartender are exactly right. How I think of it is that reinforcement (either positive or negative) increases desirable behavior. Punishment (either positive or negative) decreases undesirable behavior. Children can even use negative reinforcement with adults. For example, a child who throws a temper tantrum until he or she gets what he or she wants. When the desired behavior is performed (the child gets what he or she wants) the child removes the unpleasant stimuli (the tantrum) which reinforces and increases the desirable behavior (the adult giving the child what they want) in the future.
  • terrorist activity
  • An alarm of some sort. It keeps beeping and buzzing until you fix the problem. Babies crying until you do something for them. Pretty much any annoying noise that keeps going until you fix the problem
  • A punch in the nose if someone grabs yer ass. This is classical conditioning. In 'operant' conditioning, you slug 'em good right *before* she grabs ya' [but that's when things can get dicey, become misunderstood and prove to be overall destructive to the relationship]! ;-)
  • "Examples of Negative Reinforcement "the removal of a negative stimulus following a response" Negative Stimulus / Behavior that is reinforced Insect bite itches / Scratch it. Eyes itch / Rub them. Lights too bright / Squint or shade them Cold draft of air / Close the window Too much noise / Turn down your hearing aid (my mother's solution) Too much nagging / Drown it out with the radio or Give in and do what they want Boring class / Daydream, doodle, tune out Worry about a test / Watch TV; or Study to relieve guilt. Have a headache / Take a pain reliever Nervous Deep / breathing relaxation exercises" Source and further information: http://www.utexas.edu/courses/svinicki/ald320/negrnf.html Further information: http://www.princeton.edu/~yael/LearningCourse/Notes/Examples.doc
  • Stopping a constant pain (such as by taking your headache medicine). In the term negative reinforcement, _negative_ means the removal of an undesirable stimulus as opposed to providing a desirable stimulus (positive reinforcement).
