If you want to drive around in a black and white Crown Victoria, there's nothing that the government can do to stop you. However, if you try to install sirens or paint the word "Police" on your car, you'll probably get in trouble.

How similar is it?

They sell police cars at auction when they are old, etc. and it's definitely not illegal for you to drive them. Just don't go installing blue lights, etc.

You may own a used police car or a car that looks like a police vehicle. The only restrictions are that the car may not display the words police or law enforcement anywhere and you may not use blue (and in some states )red lights. Just beware...police love pulling over vehicles designed to closely resemble actual police cars. It's often a sign that someone's trying to imitate and officer.

Why would you want to own such a vehicle? is it an old retired police vehicle? Similarity and the real thing, are entirely two different vehicles. Make sure your vehicle does not have any markings that would indicate or hint, that your car is a police car.

Wait what's that movie where they own a used cop car... The Blues Brothers... (Is that the name of it...) Anyway... Good movie.
