I cannot support the death penalty, though some people richly deserve it. My relationship with the universe (God, Gaia, etc) does not allow me to participate in such things. I am completely unqualified to pass life and death judgements on another life.

Also, I think the death penalty should not be allowed to be carried out until we have absolute proof that the person is guilty as charged. As it stands, innocent men and women are spending thier lives in prison and dying in accordance to the death penalty. I can't think of any greater tragedy or injustice.

If I believed in the death penalty, which I more or less don't any longer, then I would have the courage of my convictions to do this.

To not do this would seem to be hypercritical, to my way of thinking.

However, you would have to be able to have confidence in the legal system that they do have the right man / woman, and that's part of the issue.

It seems these days that there are simply too many instances where they put the wrong person in prison, only to release them years later after their lives had been destroyed, but at least they do get a second chance if they've not been killed.

My other problem with the death sentence is largely a theoretical one at this moment, but supposing it turns out that people commit crime because they are genetically driven or pre-disposed to do so?

In other words, even though they may have committed the crime, it really wasn't any more their fault than the fact they have blue eyes or are six feet tall rather than five feet six.

While you certainly don't want murderers and rapists, say, wandering the streets, is it really right, as fellow human beings, to kill these people because of something they may have no control over?

It would be like killing a rogue elephant, when it has no choice in how it behaves.

Like I said, this is largely theoretical at this point in time, but with the ever-increasing body of knowledge relating to genetics and their effect on human physiology and behaviour, who knows what they will find out next?

depends. For a child abuser/child molester. I would laugh while I was doing it. That may sound harsh but if you read my previous post you understand my reasoning behind that.. Anybody else.. would depend...If it were a true accidental killing, I don't think they should get the death penalty but if it were someone like Ted Bundy.. no.. wouldn't bother me a bit..I just consider it that I am letting his future victims live.. and for some people death is the only real justice.
