Why are the hats state troopers wear so ridiculously large?

    I remember watching a documemtary is sociology class one time about uniforms and the sociologists theororized that the emphasis on large aspects of a uniform are meant to convey power and strength...eg. large shoulder pads conveyed that the person was bigger than they actually might be. Perhaps a large hat is designed to convey authority, strength and intimidation...

    That has been part of their uniforms since I can remember. Maybe the hats are large so if we are speeding, and see those hats,we can slow down..lol

    Lets try, also to keep the sun off of your face and neck and the rain out of your eyes and from running down the back of your neck.
    It is just practical. Have you ever stood on the side of the road in the pouring rain or the blazing sun investigating an accident or directing traffic?
    Do you think cowboys wore hats originaly to look bigger in the bars? Just todays urban cowboys!
    To protect from the elements and have an unobstruted view of what is going on around you..
