Without noticeable signs... This question sounds like it has malicious intent.

You can't, unless you have the power to call lightning down from the sky.

Locate some place that actually has these beetles and will (most likely illegally) sell them to you. I hate pine trees and would like to see them all die a horrible death. Replace them with a nice tree that is worth keeping alive.

My next door neighbor has been killing my trees with the belief that they control utility easments. She has tried many times and failed to kill the large pine tree in my yard. The 2sswipe that asked the question, is she from Maryland?

I suppose you could make sure it gets too much water, or salt or something... but is it that bad? surely there is a friendlier way to solve this problem?

pee at the base of it every time you get a chance. (saving pee in a container and dumping it at the base of the tree daily will do it.)

if you take out that tree, you will have direct sun and maybe worse conditions considering global warming and increased temperatures around the world.

Geez tree huggers, get a life! Hundreds of homeowners are dealing with their neighbors overgrown, encroaching and damaging trees. I know exactly why this question was posed. The problem starts from the ignorance in what people plant in their yards. i.e., when homes are close in proximity, a pine tree or Eucalyptus tree is not appropriate. The pine tree historically grows to be 40-50 ft high with long overhanging branches, with diameters reaching up to 20 feet or more. Their roots are usually only 3 ft beneath the soil. Therefore, they are prone to fall over in heavy winds and/or rains. They are one of the messiest of trees year round with pine needles, sap and large reaching and damaging roots. Most cities offices won't get involved with tree issues and the law seems to protect the owner of the offending tree. If the roots are damaging your plumbing, slabs, etc and you cut the roots on your side of the property and the tree dies, the tree owner can sue you. BUT, just try to get a judge to rule in your favor when you've paid out hundreds of dollars for trimming back their branches from your property, repairs to plumbing, irrigatin lines, fences, plants and cars.. (from sap). You can cut the branches of the tree to your property line and that's it. If the tree dies as a result of cutting the branches, you can be sued. I say, pour Borax onto the rooted area inside and around the tree. Repeat until dead. Just pray it doesn't fall on your house.
