If you go into any mainstream cafe or shop and ask for a muffin, then the chances are you'll be presented with something that looks like the image; an American muffin.

However, if you go into a tea shop, like those you'll find in the heart of the Lake District or the Peak District, then you may well be presented with an English muffin, though usually the person serving you would ask for clarification. As LF says though, those kinds of shops would generally have the muffins on dispaly behind a glass screen, so you'd be able to see before you asked.

As an English person, if you asked me for a muffin, I'd automatically present you with an American one, as (I think...)would most people, except of course my mum who resents the infiltration of American culture (and muffins!) into English society, but that's another story altogether!

    It depends.
If you go into most places in England the only kind of muffins they sell are American ones (I know, this is weird, but more people eat American muffins than English ones even here). So you're much more likely to get an American one. I've come across some teenagers who aren't even aware of the existence English kind of muffin. So generally a muffin here is exactly the same as a muffin in the US.

Although most places in England that sell muffins will have them on display in a glass cabinet, so you'd be able to see before asking which you were likely to get.

Some hotels, restaurants and the more old fashioned cafes will sell English muffins- normally during breakfast hours (i.e. before noon). If you see "muffins" on a breakfast menu, it usually refers to the English kind (although this isn't always the case so its best to ask before ordering!) But generally English muffins are something sold in supermarkets for you to toast and eat at home, not something eaten in cafes. If you really want an English muffin, try asking for a "breakfast muffin" and they should know what you mean. If you ask for a muffin in a cafe or bakers, you'll get an American muffin (which is different from a cupcake, which is much smaller and softer than a muffin).

English muffins are quite unusual, even here. If you order Eggs Benedict in a restaurant it will come on an English muffin and they are sold in supermarkets, but I have never seen one anywhere else. Most people assume a muffin to be an American muffin.

If you asked for a muffin in england, you'd get an (english) muffin <See the Image> (like bread, that is cut in half and used for sandwiches etc. a muffin in england is also known as a Barm or Barm Cake)
In England if you would like an American Muffin you would ask for a Bun or a Cupcake (if that term is used in the particular shop)

    You'd still get a Muffin.
I'm not sure what they call English muffins in England, but I'm certain they don't call them muffins.
