The smell of the boots must be a warning not to cross over the fence and it makes the animals want to stay in and to not try and escape.

I found was it was created when a Rancher or Farmer passed away. It was a sign of respect, for the Farmer/Rancher. This is a great idea and we would like to believe that this is the reason it was actually started. The Rancher/Farmer/Cowboy this would become the ultimate sign of respect.

Ranchers wear out boots really fast. What do you do with all these old boots? They put them on wooden fence post to keep the rain off of the cut end of the post to prevent it from rotting as fast.
