Question

Help answer this question below.

Why don't men dress smartly for the cinema? Many women wear heels, shirts, skirts or smart dresses to go to the cinema. Would it not therefore be appropriate for men to wear a smart shirt and tie and make more effort.

Men are smart, they are going to sit in a large dark room and no one will be taking notice of them. Also, if they get grease on their hands from a bucket of popcorn and they don't have a napkin, they can just wipe their hands on their jeans.

I'm a guy and I dress for the cinema.
2 weeks ago my wife and I went and I was wearing a black mini skirt, white lace blouse with sheer sleeves, nylons and 4" heels. Add a little make-up and I was good to go!

I think this question made a turn at the wrong decade. I can't remember the last time I saw a whole lot of skirts and smart dresses at the movies. Unless we were in Greenwich Village and those were men making the effort;)

No. I think it is up to the individual to dress as they see fit as long as falls within society's norms. The cinema is not a formal social occasion. If the woman decides to dress up, that is because she chooses to do so for herself or for her date. The man should not feel obligated to dress up in a shirt and tie. That is not customary.

However, if he wants to make a good impression, "smart" clothing make a big difference. A tie might be overkill though (not to mention uncomfortable).

Because women tend to enjoy dressing up, showing themselves off and feeling good. Men are not the same, they are content in whatever is comfortable. They also usually follow the line of thought "We'll be in the dark anyway, so why does it matter?".

I almost never wear a skirt or dress to the movies... And I don't ask my date to wear a tie... I like to be comfy and cuddly... And this way, if he shares the popcorn, I don't have to worry about ruining my outfit!

I'd say that's way over dressed to sit in the dark and watch something. Movies are a casual affair, no need for a tie, and I don't like high heel on my date their either..

  • The cinema is not a formal restaurant, so I don't see any reason to do that. Anyway, all you do there is sit for an hour or more in the darkness and eat popcorn, no one's going to be looking at you and judging you by how you dress (except, perhaps, for the questioner).

I don't know what theater you frequent but most people I see at the movies are in casual wear.

I wear shirts and ties all the time. I hate how lazy society has become in appearance.

What cinema do you go to? I haven't seen very many women dress up to go in the last couple decades. (Oh, and "shirts" and "skirts" does NOT mean a woman has dressed up.)

I seriously had to think about what a cinema was.
    We just call them theaters.

define smart... because in my book smart has more to do with functionality than fashion... and heels are anything but smart. if any event which requires physical response from the woman occurs (attack, car accident in a rural area, anything like that) the heels are nothing but debilitating not to mention they are always unhealthy.
you think that a shirt which takes 30 seconds to button up is smarter than a quick pull over T? and the necktie is one of the least smart accessories ever created. it is a vulnerability, anyone grabs it you are at their mercy even if you have a 50% weight advantage and if it gats caught in some operating machinery you WILL DIE. it falls in your food, their construction makes them difficult/expensive to clean so they are a haven for bacteria. I will never in my life voluntarily wear a tie and were I a company owner ties would be prohibited from my facilities. I have no desire to have my employees look like dogs on a leash and if it is not contrary to company policy some moronic manager might get your mindset and expect them from his division.

men can wear skirt if want to as it need to change nice fashion - trousers are so boring as too plain so time to change. I used mini skirt with black tights and flat heel knee-lenght boots that look nice :)

Formal cinema, opera, formal concerts, yes. Men should always make an effort to dress well when going out to these engagements. And when they dress formally, I wish they'd finish the entire package by grooming themselves properly (shaved, hair neatly combed, tie done up, shoes shined, etc.) I don't like it when some guys dress nicely, but leave their hair messy or try to look rough with unshaven faces. It's okay to have a neat beard or mustache, but to leave a lot of uneven stubble for what they think is "style" and then put on a suit? Or wear sneakers with a suit or tuxedo?? Yeech.

Informal cinema, it's okay to dress casually. But still, I think dressing neatly is important, even if it's casual.

I think it's important for both men and women to dress neatly and respectably in public. You don't have to spend a fortune to look good. It's just a matter of self-respect and dignity.
