    I thought I would add some pictures to go along with my previously posted answer. They are in order as listed.

    I'll give you my top 5. the one that tops them all is the Biltmore estate in Ashfield, N. Carolina. It is 175,000 sq. ft. A french rennaissance built in 1895 by George Vanderbilt. #2 is Oheka.Cold springs Harbor, Long Is.This estate is over 100,000 sq.ft. it is a French Chateau built in 1919 by Otto HErman KAhn, thus it's name. #3i is WhiteMarsh Hall in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania.This 105,000 sq.ft. masterpiece was built in 1921 by Edward T. Stotesbury, it had 150 rooms, with 45 bathrooms. I use past tense for this house because, sadly, it has been torn down. #4 would be Fair Field in South Hampton This is the new home for Ira Rennert. The main house is about 65,000 sq,ft. but, this place is a complex with over 100,000 in sq. ft'g. #5 may not be the largest but it is local to me, it is the Carolands in Hillborough, Ca. This american rennaissance in the beaux-arts style was built in 1916 and at that time it was the 2nd largest house in the u.s. it is 68,000 sq,ft. it was considered for purchase by 2 administrations to be used as a western white house. as a high schooler we would use the ,then abandoned, house as our party spot. it has been returned to its former glory by its new owners from Franklin-Templeton investments. There are many other great properties in places like the "Gold Coast" and Bellview, R.I.

    The home of the Sultan of Brunei the Istana Nurul Iman is the largest inhabited home on the planet. Istana Nurul Iman contains 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, and a floor area of 2,152,782 square feet. I just thought it should be mentioned here even though it is a functioning palace it is still a home.

    Number of windows: Frames 1,257; panes approx. 10,000

    Number of doors: Doorways 467, doors approx. 950 not including cabinet doors.

    Number of fireplaces: 47 (gas, wood, or coal burning)

    Number of chimneys: Presently 17 with evidence of 2 others

    Number of cars at her death: 2 (a 1917 Pierce Arrow Limousine & a 1916 4 cyl. Buick truck)

    Number of bedrooms: Approx. 40

    Number of kitchens: 5 or 6

    Number of staircases: 40, total of stair steps - 367

    Number of skylights: Approx. 52

    Number of gallons of paint required to paint entire home: Over 20,000

    Number of ballrooms: 2 (one nearly complete, and one under construction)

    Blueprints available: No, Mrs. Winchester never had a master set of blueprints, but did sketch out individual rooms on paper and even tablecloths!

    Square feet = 24,000 (currently)

    I know it's not a large one now, but at one time (before an earthquake) it was quite larger. I just think it's an interesting house.

    I am surprised that the Randolf Hearst place isn't one of the 5. I thought that Aaron Spelling (Tori's father) had one of the largest houses built in California but I have no idea what the actual size was.

    I would have to say the Minoan palace at Knossos, covering an area of 215,278 square feet. It was built on the Greek island of Crete around 2000 B.C. and lasted 3 centuries until an earthquake destroyed it.

    I'm not sure if this qualifies ... a tribe of High Plains Cree in Canada's Yukon converted an old abandoned gold mine on their native land into a home for the entire tribe on the single upper level and they use the 11 deeper levels as "in home gardens" artificial green house growing for tropical fruit and medicinal herbs ... the chief's master bedroom is 10,000 square feet, and that is just one room ... there is a central shaft with a spiral ramp and every 100 yards of depth there are three branch tunnels that are each one mile long and 12 yards wide ... so multiply 12 levels by 3 miles by 12 yards for the square footage.

    The biofuel house article sounds a usual rambling by a organzation trying to raise money to pay their wages.
    There is the old palace in St Petersburg that I heard was over 100,00 square ft. One of the palaces in France is big. Buckinghampalace is acurrently inhabited house.

    Biofuels are to play a key role in the energy supply of the largest English country house to be built in decades. As well as biofuels, the house will also use other renewable energy sources such as a photovoltaic roof to harness the suns energy, solar-thermal water heating, geothermal heating and boosted insulation from a grass roof.

    The estate will occupy almost 200 acres in Lincolnshire and is being built by Geoff Dyson, a house builder from Yorkshire. The floor area of the building is to be about 40,000 square feet.

    The house design is contemporary and the 'gardens and grounds' are receiving equal attention to detail. Over 25,000 trees that are native to Britain are to be planted along with a wild flower meadow area.

    According to the Sunday Times (07/05/2006) "Half the 220 acres will be planted with biomass crops, which can be anaerobically digested to provide electricity. This will be supplemented by solar panels and geothermal heating. Even the horse manure will be turned into fuel."

    there is soon to be a new official worlds largest house. being built by the 5th richest man in the world, indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani it is approx. 400 000 sq feet. 27 stories and cost a reported 2 billion dollars. it is equipt with such amenities as a 168 car parking grarage, a full size fitness club and not to mention his snow room where on a hot mumbai day you can retreat to have snow flakes fall on you. it will be completed in January of 2009, Mukesh and family will be leaving their now 22 story home.

    The worlds largest house is owned by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. It was built in 1984 and is believed to be 2,152,782 Square Feet. It has 1788 rooms, 257 toilets and cost a total of 422 million dollars. he also has the worlds largest rolls royce fleet consisting of 150 cars, none of which being identical. together with his younger brother he reportedly owns 1998 other cars.

    simple enough, its the House of Istana Nurul Iman palace.

    It contains 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, and a floor area of 2,152,782 square feet (200,000 m²). Amenities include 5 swimming pools, and an air conditioned stable for the Sultan's 200 polo ponies, a 110-car garage, a banquet hall that can be expanded to accommodate up to 4,000 guests, and a mosque accommodating 1,500 people.

    The palace was built in 1984 at a cost of around $1.4 billion USD and has 564 chandeliers, 51,000 light bulbs, 44 stairwells, and 18 elevators. It is also a home to a car collection that includes custom-made Ferraris and Bentleys as well as 165 Rolls-Royces.

    It was designed by the National Artist of the Philippines for Architecture, Leandro V. Locsin and built by the Filipino firm, Ayala International.
