Why does Jay Garrik where such a stupid looking hat?

    What we're talking about here is a metal disk-shaped helmet with little wings on the sides of the top.

    Jay Garrick, the original Flash, wears that hat for three reasons. One, it provides fairly good protection for his head, which is a fairly vulnerable area. (Here's a bit of related trivia for you: the first British soldiers to enter combat in WWII wore cloth caps into battle. Then the army did a study and found that something like two thirds of the fatalities involved head injuries. They issued helmets to the soldiers and the fatality rate dropped by fifty percent. Helmets are important!)

    The second reason is, it makes a good weapon. Garrick can hurl that thing like a discus, and given his enhanced agility and reflexes, he can hurl it pretty well. Lots of villains who have lost teeth to that hat don't think it's so funny.

    The third and main reason is because that hat is more or less identical to the hat/helmet that Hermes (called Mercury by the Romans) was always depicted as wearing. And Hermes is, among other things, the god of travel and speed. It's a mythical homage in a world where the gods are much more real and present than you might think (ask Wonder Woman).

    Welcome to the DC Universe. Jay Garrik is a member of the Justice Society of America. During his time period the Nazis are still fighting WWII. Therefor, his costume is a reflection of the times he lives in.
