i live in merritt island, fl. there are canals all over the place. some function as ditches, others are for boating transport out to the river, some are large enough for barges to go down. a lot are for private use (they run through neighborhoods, not near hotels).

There is a canal in my town - at the confluence of three rivers, the Broad, the Saluda and the Congaree. It is mostly used for recreation now, however, in days of old, it was used for transport. Cool question, Grandma!~

The Erie canal went right down the lengh of our city..I always thought it was an alley groing up..It has historical markers, but no one cares.. We do have canals and locks in Waterford. they only transport luxury and recreation boats in the summer, to go from the Mohawk River to the Hudson.

Yes and it is called the Welland canal.It connects lake Ontario and lake Erie. it has 8 locks. and it can take about 11 hours to Traverse the canal's length.its part of the Trent Severn waterways.and ship's from all over the world go through it.

Yes--the Point Pleasant Canal. It is the northern terminus of the Intracoastal Waterway on the east coast of the USA. It connects the Barnegat Bay with the Manasquan River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is used by pleasure craft.
