Music helps! My mom is a dementia and home-bound hospice patient, that is also diabetic, has COPD, congestive heart failure, and has had several mini strokes. Mom is limited on what she can do and her muscle tone is almost nil. We have a variety of exercises that we do with her (sitting, standing, and walking) each day that were designed for her by her physical therapist and doctor. We have found that just asking her to do the exercises results in nothing getting done a lot of frustration and confusion from her (part of the dementia), and a lot of frustration on our end. I have found it works out so much better if we put on some great, lively music that she enjoys (oldies/motown/big band) and we exercise with her. Just asking mom to exercise doesn't work; we tell her what we are going to do next and do them along with her. We do have to take several breathers along the way, but at least movement is accomplished. In the long run, we all benefit.
