Heres what the COAT's are :

The Coats' peaceful mission is to help warm Answerbag with positivity and friendship.

We do this by trying to help others that have been trolled* to regain lost points and by offering other support to ABers such as a kind word or an ear to listen.

We are not here to manipulate the points system; this is not our purpose. We are not a group that has come together to bring one another AB status and fame. We very often act anonymously, quietly slipping in to replace lost points while we continue enjoying the questions, answers and conversation that brought us here.

We, as a group, do not engage in downrate missions even on trolls; we believe this to be counter productive of our peaceful mission to spread positivity and friendship.

*Trolling is defined by us as multiple downrates on a single person by usually a single person for no apparent reason other than hate, spite or just meanness.

Downrates on one or two questions/answers for a possible legitimate reason does not constitute trolling.

Spreading friendship and positivity in the spirit of community on AB. It is not about points; in fact, COAT reinforces the notion that trolling attacks are best countered by turning to friends instead of focusing on the negativity that could occur on the Internet. There is, of course, more. That is why COAT members consistently point questions toward the Mission Statement, to Prime's profile, and to other Q+A that better explain the meaning of the club. COAT is in no way exclusive or self-serving. We respect and welcome any user who has respected AB.

It has already been said very well in a few places so I shall copy and paste a bit. For the short version, here is from my profile:

COAT - Cooperative Of Anti Trolls - Showing trolls the meaning of the word "backfire!" All we do is positroll (points up) people who have been trolled and offer them support. We do not even, as a group, downrate trolls and we do not points up each other. Each COAT member picks what "type" of COAT. Mine is for the awareness of the plight of my people.

... and Prime's profile with the mission statement:
    http://www.answerbag.com/profile/?id=241558

Here is one of Prime's answers that goes into it nicely:

All I have to add to the previous answers is that we maintain contact with one another and get together to help ABers when needed. We've grown to do more than just anti-troll because the members of AB are more important themselves that all the points on the site.

Some times we just listen if that's what is needed, other times we help search for answers or try to direct members to someone who may know more on a particular subject than we.

There is also the aspect that has grown in the club of encouraging one another as needed. This just 'kind of happens' as we grow to know one another.

Last but not least, we just like to have fun so we tend to throw spontaneous virtual parties for what ever reason is handy. ;-D

... and a blog where I wrote out what is required to be a COAT, what is not, and various miscellany:

A COAT may just be the last great hope of the AB community. At least, that's the way I feel tonight. But enough about that.

As far as you are concerned, if you get a boatload of DR's that you did not earn, they will help give you back what is rightfully yours.

If you get ganged up on, they help disperse the crowd.

If you are attacked verbally, they work behind the scenes to make sure there is a stop put to it as soon as is humanly possible.

All this is done behind the scenes. You will likely never know they are there watching over you. But they are there if you need them. +5

Being a COAT means standing up against bullies. It doesn't mean we are perfect human beings or that we never have a bad day. It means we are willing to take responsibility for helping to keep this place pleasant, fair and safe. There are some pretty evil people who get on here from time to time. Sometimes they just downrate for no reason and try to bully someone into shutting up. Sometimes they post vile pornography in answers, of a kind you wouldn't want your child to stumble across. Sometimes they hack into you computer and create havoc in your life. Being a COAT is a gift you give people that some evenings instead of vegging on here and enjoying conversation, you are making sure staff is aware of the 52 vile pictures posted in answers all over the site.

    Cognition aka Cog

To me this is what is means to be a COAT.

It goes back to being a kid, the one picked on by the bullies, the one picked on at the bus stop. If only the other kids would have said "hey leave her alone," if they would have said "hey stop that". I think the COATs help members who have been victimized by cyber bullies; we are the ones that say “stop” and mean it.

We teach the bullies to "use their words" to voice an opinion not their minus button. We teach them that there are many opinions out there, and to be respectful to the people voicing them. We teach them to use the flag if something is truly offensive.

We are also a group of people that look for the ill, the lonely, the sick, the depressed, and the otherwise afflicted. We become their AB Candy Striper, we listen, we care, we inspire, and we give hope.

The idea of this club was seemingly simple. If someone is excessively trolled, the COATs would quietly restore points, and more importantly, offer moral support to those affected users. We all understand that the more you get involved in AB, the more senseless downrates offend and hurt us. You inevitably take it seriously, of course. We can turn the other cheek, yes. But hey. The more support the merrier, yes?

I personally feel that the initial theory collapsed, especially considering the number of members. The more you are on AB, the more you are bound to beartrap yourself into some form of drama. So then, having 20 people available to uprate any given Q+A seems a little dangerous to me. That being said, I admire the individual users of COAT whom I have known for a long period of time. I respect their desire to increase positivity while fighting the hatred of those infamous red negatives.

Nevertheless, I want to publicly express my concern when it comes to properly conducting a group club with a mission. Congratulary professor questions and uprates within-group will hurt the group and hint at self-promotion. I hope COAT maintains itself as a voice within the forum that supercedes point totals and does not give voice to the trolls. The emphasis ought to always be positive. Engaging in drama, even when theoretically positive, still feeds it.

I understand part, their here to protect those who are trolled (A.K.A. "Back fire"), what I don't understand, is how some of them become a COAT .. I don't know, maybe it's because I see things they don't .. hopefully, it stays that way, because they wouldn't get the love and respect that most of them deserve, if everyone did.

The COATS are a group of troublemakers! They go around spreading hate and discontent by doing recon missions over those who have been trolled, for the purpose of returning the points taken from people. They quietly sneak in and out without being seen. They tend to the teens here who are troubled by taking them under their wings and guiding them with whatever life issues are bothering them.

They are quite a bother! They tend to relax those engaged in arguments, leave positive comments where there weren't any before, and serve justice to those who were unjustly treated. Freaks! +5

COAT in the username represents the member "belonging" to an AB club that supports users who have been excessively trolled or mistreated. The club is not exclusive, but the membership standards mean that each user has in turn respected the site with high plus ratings given. This measure shows that the user is truly on board with the mission, which is much less about points and much more about promoting positivity and friendship here in the community. In online arenas, it's easy for people to get lost in the senseless downrating or the otherwise negativity that is inevitable. COAT isn't about loading people up with points. It's about making people feel good and delivering that sense of kindness here on the site. Just as importantly, the COATs are all friendly and appreciate the exchanges within the group.

Help keep the troll population down . . .
On of our keys in dealing with trolls is advising everyone that is attacked not to say anything at all about it on site. First, inform AB admin or a CL, then, just drop a Coat an email and we generally set project backfire into action silently. We do this because trolls thrive off of the trouble that they can stir up; the more they can stir up, the more they will troll, so we try not to give them the satisfaction. This way, they don't get their kicks, get frustrated and try picking on someone else or going off the site completely.
