  • I would strongly encourage you to read up on NILIF...Nothing in Life is Free. You can visit this free web site for more information and support...DO check out the archives for articles and write-ups on this training method. http://www.doggiebagonline.com/ This is a FREE membership site with lots of positive support for training using Positive Reinforcement methods (+R). NILIF...is a training method that you use to teach your dogs that YOU know best and that when they do trained, desired behaviors they are rewarded by you for doing them. +R training gives your dog (s) different ACCEPTABLE behaviors to do...when they are about to choose an UNACCEPTABLE...behavior of their own! Work them SEPARATELY to start with on a daily basis for about 30 minutes at a time...use prime treat rewards, such as Human grade plain beef jerky...you really want the one you are working with to be totally focused on YOU... If one or both could care a less about food rewards..then figure out for each dog a favorite toy that they really love...THAT TOY is only used for training from now on...they have to EARN IT. Get both dogs really on their mark to SIT, STAY, LAY DOWN, BACK UP, GET OFF, DROP IT, LEAVE IT then you have some acceptable behaviors to ask them for. You can start with verbal commands and work up to using HAND SIGNALS! Just to spice things up. Extra Exercise will also help with this problem...it takes their minds off of "stupid dog tricks" that are unacceptable in nature...training and exercise gives them more important things to occupy their time and energy! Any dog that is bored..may well create its own entertainment...and we may not like what they come up with! Remember a true ALPHA dog almost NEVER starts fights..they reign with calm, benevolence..they are secure in THEIR POSITION...and so have no need to be aggressive with others...usually a "LOOK" is all they need to do to assert them selves. The dogs constantly starting fights are the BETAS..they are insecure as to their status and are constantly open to starting trouble as a means of establishing pack position....they are under a misconception! When we work to train our dogs...we naturally increase their self-esteem...because they learn that doing as requested EARNS THEM....Praise and Treats, or Praise and a VALUED Toy! For example...BOTH DOGS need to learn that they do not receive their meals...until they are sitting...in opposite sides of the feeding area. Another training "tip" if you need to feed them in separate rooms...and after the dog has sat QUIETLY and politely for you, place the bowl...count to five or ten and then ASK the one being worked with to BACK UP and sit...(move away from the bowl!) Remove the bowl (with food still in it) ADD SOMETHING (just a little bit) WONDERFUL to the bowl...be sure the dog is still sitting nicely and place the bowl...give the "OK" command for the dog to resume eating. Your dog should always be willing to stop eating and move back when requested by you or another adult...(ideally an older child too!) After our Alpha Bitch died...our two remaining fur kids had a couple of spats...trying to figure out whose in charge now...a fun simple review of good manners for both of them..."nipped" this unacceptable game in the bud...
