Some counties utilize the coroners position strictly as an administrative role, working closely with a board certified pathologist (who conducts the actual autopsies). In an administrative capacity, coroners are usually required to have at least a high school diploma, live within the county they work and are elected, as well as complete special training and continuing education credits. While coroners are elected officials, whether or not they are qualified to perform autopsies depends on whether they have a medical degree in criminal pathology.
