When the cue ball (white ball) goes into a pocket it is commonly called a 'scratch'. If you scratch while shooting for the 8 ball (the black ball) you lose. Some players allow a person to scratch on the 8 ball.

According to the PBA rules, any time you scratch on the 8-ball, whether you hit it or not, the game is over.

According to BCA League rules, during league play, a scratch on the 8 ball is not a lose. It is ball in hand to the opposing player. Whether or not it is a lose, depends on the rules you are playing by. In common bar rules, it is a lose as well as in PBA rules.

One rule that hasn't been covered yet; if playing bank the 8, a scratch is not generally counted unless the 8 drops. APA: scratch on the 8 is loss.
