It sounds to me like it's pretty far gone. I'd advise calling Sony - you'll probably have to return the unit to them to get it fixed. Depending on where you bought it, you may be able to return it - Wal-mart and Costco, for example, have very good return policies.

It may be cheaper (and it will certainly be easier) for you to purchase a new PS2 as opposed to having Sony fix the one you have now. I experienced the same problem with mine, and my local Sony outlet wanted $200 to fix it... This was some time ago, as I had one of the first-generation machines, so hopefully it doesn't cost so much now. The first wave of PS2s had a problem with the cooling fan, but the one I have now hasn't given me any trouble in almost 2 years. My first one developed that problem in a matter of months.

Try cleaning your PS2. If that fails get a laser adjustment usally that gets rid of humming, disc read error, and if it just wont read the disc.

i don't know about the ps2, but for some games you have to have a special paddle

Try buying a new controller. If that doesn't work then it's in the system it's self.
