  • engine support fixture is simply a jack under the engine, i used my floor jack on same 1997 cavalier 2.2L the head gasket was cracked at cylinder number 4 and it was burnign water use a razor blade to clean off the engine deck and cylinder head surfaces, use denatured alcohol to wipe them clean, must be perfectly clean and dry dont use carb cleaner if youre going to use a sparay cleaner then use brake cleaner since it doesnt leave residue you can also get gasket remover spray but you wont need it for this engine this job on this engine isnt too bad, i have done lots harder ones in the past unbolt the top engine mount and pull from the car after pulling the cooling fluid tank, remove the three power steering pump bolts through the pulley holes and the brace udner neath the intake 13mm wrench will get it remove the belt tensioner two bolts front mount plate 4 bolts off the front end of the head and leave it in the car it will sit and stay put when you pull the head off the engine remove the alternator with the bracket still on it remove the oil fill tube bolt and pull the tube out of the engine block it slips right out easy unbolt the exhaust manifold at the head only, leave it on the pipe and jut let it fall down by the cooling fan in that direction and leave it there unplug the injector wire plugs and fuel injection throttle sensors and get the wires off the intake and put the below the intake manifold fuel lines are a pain need a slip slide fitting tool to disconnect them and theres little room to do it on driver side behind tranny above the steering rack disconnect spark plug wires and feed them down to underneath the intake and leave them there rmeove the throttle cable bracket and disconnect the cable(or cables if there is the cruise one too) move them all out of the way by the cooling fan somewhere remove valve cover and EGR valve remove rocker arms and pushrods is a vacuum hose under the intake on a part mounted to the engine block just below the head gasket level just pull the hose out of the elbow there, a small flashlight will help LOTS remove head bolts, all 10 of them, starting at the ends, and work to the middle ones last yank the head off with the intake and all razor blade scrape clean, wipe with the alcohol and go from there power steering and fuel lines are the most difficult i only put two of the power steering bolts back in and one of the front plate bolts i didnt put back in either sometimes you have to skip a bolt or two buy new head bolts they are about 22 bucks torque the longer 5 to 46 ft lbs and the shorter stud ones to 43 then turn all of them 90 degrees right angle tighter past that did mine this morning all i have to do now is put in oil and water and fire it up head wasnt cracked that i could see and it was only burnign water on the number 4 where the gasket had a big crack in it, so im sure it wasnt warped either will find out tomorrow :D 200k miles almost, 1997 cavalier 2.2L all stock original good luck
