  • crosswords. lots of crosswords and coffee
  • I am sorry that your family is going through this time of fear and anxiety. I will say a prayer for you to make it easier for all involved. Magazines have helped us, along with coordinating times to be at the hospital at the same time during the surgery so that you aren't there alone. I would stay away from normal comfort foods: chocolate, coffee, sugary items and caffeinated drinks. Madi20 had the right idea when she offered crossword puzzles. Other books with games in them are a wonderful diversion and help pass the time.
  • If you can not get away from the thoughts then focus on the wonderful times and funny stories you remember. Watch TV in the waiting room or go for a wlk around the hospital. It will take several hours and the waiting will drive you nuts. If you are a person of faith, talk to the Lord and just put it into His hands. If your not a person of faith, relay on someone there with you to help you relax.
  • I visited some of the other patients in the ward. (if you do find out if it is permitted) i peered in a few rooms and if someone was alone i just went by 'a look' they had....can't really describe it. i just knew. I introduced myself with a short reason BEFORE i entered the room. These people were pleased and thankful to have a visit and share their experience and meet someone that was not in official capacity. lol. I wish a speedy and well recovery for your brother, and a non~stressful waiting period for you also. should you choose this, it does help time go faster and if i can get a smile from someone it's a thousand times worth it.
  • Hope your brother is well now. My mother went through bypass surgery twice and my husband once. They both had had no heart muscle damage prior to their surgeries, so that was on their side. At the time, I just convinced myself that everything would go well. They had doctors that I had full confidence in. I had other family members with me to help pass the time. Again, I hope your brother is recoverying well.
