How do you value technology?

Technology does not always make us lazy but the abuse of it will.

Technology often caters to us, and that makes us lazy, and that is always true, even if to a smaller degree in some cases or with some people.

You are so right. However we need to heed this caution. We must not be at a loss without them. For intsnce without GPS we can still go back to our faithful street directory to help us around. Isn't it?

If you can locate it. Most would have to go out and try to figure out where they could buy one, and be at a loss at that. Most everyone has their lives on their computers and cell phones, and they don't even realize it. Receipts, phone numbers, correspondence, Maps and Directions, Recipes, and so on are all on the computer. Only when the computer drive crashes, or the cell phone dies or gets lost do people realize just how dependent they have been, and there is no chance of retrieval or "going back" to any hard copy of anything. You only have to go through it once to come face to face with the reality of how dependent we've all become.

After losing a full 200GB hard drive a couple of years ago, I now make a regular habit of burning my drives to DVD's. I have a number of CD/DVD binders that hold 240 disc's each. It takes 50 DVD's to back up an entire 200GB hard drive. It takes a bit of time but it's worth it to have all the files I've downloaded and created safe. I burn all personal data to a CD once a month(my emails, address book, receipts, documents, bookmarks, etc.). I also have a disk I keep updated with all the smaller essential programs that I'd need to reinstall should I need to rebuild the drive again in the future. I also have a small personal phone book thats kept up to date with all the numbers in my cell phone.

If you want to spring for a RAID controller card, you can also buy a second drive and create a mirror drive set. Then you have two drives storing your data, if one goes down, the other one takes over. You can get RAID cards fairly easily. There's a few of them on this page from NewEgg.com -
