It could be a fusable link or relay. Posible its just a junk starter. if you have the means to take the starter out auto zone orielys or other places test the starter 4 free. It also could be the wires that conect 2 the starter coroded. Ive had that happen to me with a new starter. let me know I am ase certified so I can try to help from here.

I have a simalar problem. I have a 97 sunfire, and was trying to start the thing when it was about minus 30 degrees celceus outside, the car was cranking but did not start. I went to try it the next day and the starter would not even crank, so I thought I fried my starter so I replaced it, and was still getting the same problem, the starter won't crank. I tested the starter with jumper cable and the engine started for 2 seconds then shut down. I don't know where or what a fuseable link is and can't find it. Also the Theft lock light is on solid, so I don't know if this is caused from it barely starting in the cold weather. How can I tell if this is the problem. How can I tell if it is my ignition switch or fuseable link, or ignition coil.
    Any help would be great,
    Thanks, Russ

Also do your lights and things come on with the key. If not that is in the ignition.

simplest thing, check the connections, if those are good, then find your self a nice screwdriver that you don't really like, i suggest borrowing one from your father in law (haha), and jump the starter. Do this by finding your starter solenoid, probably on the starter for your pontiac, and use the screwdriver the connect the pos and neg bolts on the solenoid. CAUTION: wear a rubber glove, and eye protection, as this will cause sparking, oh and make sure nothing flamiable is near.

That's about the easiest way to check if your solenoid is bad or good. I suggest not doing that if your not comftroable witht that kind of thing
