Question

Help answer this question below.

I just started using a different car. The tinting on the rear window is really dark and I can't see well out the rearview mirror at night. Is it possible to remove the tinting and how expensive would it be? Are there any other solutions?

In California, you don't have to have a rear window view, or see out the back window, but you must have a right-hand mirror if the "rear" view is blocked. It is expensive to have removed.. here it would cost about $40 per side window, and $70 for the rear window, it is very difficult to do it yourself. If the rear window has the defroster in it, it may be damaged by removing the tinting and even a shop will not guarantee the defroster will not be damaged.

I would suggest using the right-hand mirror more and even possibly getting a "bubble" mirror to stick to it for better visiblity.
Remember that at night you don't see well anyway, and that the headlights are your guide to where the cars are around you.

ok you can do it yourself, it is pretty easy but it depends on the type of tint, some come off easy others take some time and patience. ok to start off you will need a few tools and supplies.
    1. a black trash bag
    2. simple green 50/50 with water mix.
    3. razor knife,(olfa or stanley knife with ofla blade best.
    4. soapy water in a water sprayer, mix dawn dish detergent(the blue one) just a little bit till it turns light blue.
    5. a bright sunny day with no clouds.
    6. and last a non scratch scowerpad.
ok now that you have your car in the sun, move your car so that the ack window is in direct to the sun use your hand to see where it is at that time. then get a friend or if it is not windy you can do it yourself, i have had to do that a few times. cut the black trash bag bottom off just by the seam, and then cut it long wise. so that you have a big plastic sheat. not with a friend or yourself spray the outside rear window and set the bag over top. strech it out till it is smooth. now use your knife to cut the paremeter and take away the excess. now you go inside the car get those front seats out of the way and spray the rear inside window with the simple green, if you want set the plastic bag still facing the same way like outside. so that it lays on your rear dash. now spray the rear window inside with simple green heavy. when you do that get the bag to fit inside the rear window start with the middle and run your hands out to the edge. now dont worry about all the little bubbles. just so that it is up there on its own. make sure all the windows are up and close all the doors.
now wait 15 min no more no less. you will know if it ready place your hand on the outside of the glass and if really hot and still see the simple green it is good. now after you have waited 15 min, go inside start in the upper corner use fingernails or knife blade to start it. now slowly pull it to the opposite corner. if it is done right you will have one big piece or several smaller pieces. and when you get it all off you spray the back window with the soapy water and use the non scratch scower pad to scrape off the glue that is left behind. that is called sweating off the tint.
