  • Darwin didn't actually have much to say on human evolution originially - he didn't even mention it in Origin of the Species - everyone just put two and two together. He does not mention these areas in Descent of Man either. Desmond Morris does a lot of speculating on how we evolved from apes. He says that when primates started walking upright, they lost the visual cues of brightly colored vaginal labia and raised buttocks, so human lips and the breasts of women became larger to take the place of these visual cues. He doesn't talk about the area around the nipples and anus, but the former could be to make it easier for the baby to find the nipple, and the latter might not be a genetic thing at all.
